Introduction:

Fire is a very common chemical reaction. Like all chemical reactions, there are chemical reactants (fuel and oxygen) and chemical products (smoke, carbon dioxide, and water). This chemical reaction only occurs when conditions are right. You will learn about these conditions in this lesson.

Activity:

  • Watch the following video (use your earphones if you have them, or watch with a neighbor to minimize noise!)

  • Open the activity CE4: Fire Triangle from your Quia account. Complete the assignment, using the information in the video and the included charts.

Conclusion:

Fire is a chemical reaction that can occur when three ingredients are present: Fuel, Oxygen, and Heat. Taking away one of these three ingredients, known as the Fire Triangle, can allow firefighters to extinguish a fire.
